MerkleLeaf

MerkleLeaf turns forest field data into tamper-proof, on-chain records. Every tree we sample — its location, diameter, height, and spectral index — gets logged to a Vyper smart contract on Arbitrum, hashed against the original field sheet so anyone can verify it hasn't been altered. Built for forestry and carbon-credit projects that need real, auditable evidence instead of editable spreadsheets.

Sự miêu tả

MerkleLeaf is a blockchain-based registry that turns forest field data into permanent, verifiable evidence. Forestry and carbon-credit projects today rely on spreadsheets, photos, and paper records that can be edited after the fact — there is no reliable way to prove that a field measurement (a tree's diameter, its exact location, its biometric state) wasn't altered retroactively to inflate results or hide mismanagement. MerkleLeaf solves this by anchoring every field sample directly on-chain: once a measurement is logged, it is immutable and publicly auditable by anyone, forever.

Technical Details

Blockchain: Arbitrum One (mainnet)

Smart Contracts: Vyper 0.4.3, built and deployed with the Moccasin framework and titanoboa for testing

Frontend: Astro, Tailwind CSS

Deployment: Vercel

Key Features

Immutable Field Records: Each logged sample stores a tree's location (latitude/longitude), diameter at breast height, trunk and total height, and a spectral index (NDVI) slot for future satellite integration. Once written, no one — not even the contract owner — can edit or delete it.

Cryptographic Field Verification: Every sample carries a hash of its original field sheet or photo, so anyone can confirm that the on-chain record matches the physical data that was collected, without exposing the raw file itself.

Access Control with No Single Point of Failure: Only addresses explicitly authorized by the project owner can log new samples, modeling real field operators or remote-sensing oracles. Ownership itself is transferable, so the registry is never orphaned if a key is lost.

On-Chain Data Integrity: Every write is validated at the contract level — latitude, longitude, NDVI, and height ranges are all checked before being accepted, preventing malformed or physically impossible data from ever reaching the chain.

Built for Low-Cost, High-Frequency Logging: Deployed on Arbitrum One specifically because forestry monitoring means many small transactions over time — the full deploy plus 23 real tree samples from a Gran Chaco quebracho plot cost under $0.50 in total gas.

Verified and Auditable: The contract's Vyper source code is verified on Arbiscan with an exact bytecode match, so any judge, partner, or carbon auditor can read the real logic behind the registry, not just trust a black box.

Conclusion

MerkleLeaf aims to give forestry and carbon-credit projects something they currently lack: proof. By moving field verification from editable spreadsheets to an immutable, cryptographically verifiable ledger on Arbitrum, we make it possible for anyone — a buyer, an auditor, a regulator — to independently confirm that a tree was measured where and how it's claimed to have been, without having to trust the project's own paperwork. Next steps include integrating real satellite NDVI data (currently a placeholder) and a write interface so field operators can log samples directly from the browser.

Tiến độ hackathon

- Hardened ForestRegistry.vy: added transfer_ownership (so the registry is never orphaned if a key is lost) and on-chain range validation for latitude, longitude, DAP, and tree heights. - Wrote 17 automated tests (titanoboa) covering every validation and permission path. - Deployed to Arbitrum One mainnet and verified the source code on Arbiscan (exact match). - Logged 23 real field samples from a Gran Chaco plot — full deploy + data load cost ~$0.44 in gas. - Built a read-only viewer showing the on-chain ledger with a plot map and per-sample transaction verification, linked from the project site.
